CertainTeed Corporation manufactures residential and commercial roofing materials, solar, siding, insulation, trim and ceiling products. CertainTeed is a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain, which claims to be the "world leader in the habitat and construction markets". Saint-Gobain had 2017 sales of approximately USD $47 billion.
George Brown founded the General Roofing Manufacturing Company in 1904. In 1917 he changed the company’s name to CertainTeed based on its slogan, “Quality Made Certain, Satisfaction Guaranteed.” The company continued to grow as a manufacturer of asphalt shingles and in the 1960’s expanded into insulation and vinyl siding. Saint-Gobain acquired controlling interest of the company in 1976. Today CertainTeed and its affiliates employ over 5,700 people and have more than 60 manufacturing facilities throughout North America.
CertainTeed offers credentialing programs for both contractors and companies. Contractor programs included the Shingle Quality Specialist and Master Shingle Applicator. These credentials are earned by passing a test and are prerequisites for participation in the company's programs.
Residential contractors can apply for the ShingleMaster program and the SELECT ShingleMaster program. Benefits of the ShingleMaster program include extended warranty coverage, listing on CertainTeed's "Locate A Contractor" website, marketing assistance, and rewards. Requirements include employing at least one person who is qualified as a Shingle Quality Specialist and a Master Shingle Applicator-qualified crew, or completing a ShingleMaster Credential Course and employing at least one person who is qualified as a Master Shingle Applicator.
Benefits of the SELECT ShingleMaster program are similar to those of the ShingleMaster program. Requirements include being in business for 5 years or being a ShingleMaster for 1 year, having 50% of the crew MSA-certified, employ a Shingle Quality Specialist, passing the Business Fiscal Responsibility exam, and being properly insured.
CertainTeed offers several shingle options in many colors. The CertainTeed line includes Landmark shingles, which are designed to replicate the appearance of cedar shake roofing, and Patriot shingles, a single-layered asphalt shingle that uses advanced color technology to provide an appearance similar to architectural shingles. The CertainTeed line also includes several solar reflective shingles that are designed to reflect solar energy and heat away from the roof.
Certainteed claims to recycle the bulk of their internal waste from manufacturing. The company also began the Roofing Responsibly™ program, which is designed to promote homeowners and contractors to recycle old shingles. Certainteed also offers solar shingles, which reduces energy use and CO2 emissions.
The CertainTeed warranty varies according to product. Shingles are covered for a period ranging from 20 years to a limited lifetime warranty. Shingles are also covered by an algae resistance warranty ranging from 10 to 15 years.
