Landmark is a brand of architectural roofing shingles designed for residential and commercial applications. The Landmark brand is part of CertainTeed, which is a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain. Saint-Gobain which had sales of approximately $45 billion in 2016.

Corporate History

 

CertainTeed was founded as the General Roofing Manufacturing Company in 1904, with the name changed to CertainTeed in 1917. CertainTeed continued to grow as a manufacturer of asphalt shingles, and in 1976 Saint-Gobain acquired controlling interest of the company. Today CertainTeed and its affiliates employ over 5,700 people, with more than 60 manufacturing facilities throughout North America.

Product Lines

Landmark shingles are available in three levels of weight and thickness, with a wide variety of colors. The Landmark line includes Landmark, with dual layer durability at 235 lbs. per square; Landmark Pro, featuring dual layer high performance at 250 lbs. per square; and Landmark Premium, featuring two-piece laminated fiberglass-based construction and 300 lbs. per square.

Credentialing

CertainTeed offers credentialing programs for both contractors and companies. Contractor programs included the Shingle Quality Specialist and Master Shingle Applicator. These credentials are earned by passing a test and are prerequisites for participation in the company's programs.

Residential contractors can apply for the ShingleMaster program and the SELECT ShingleMaster program. Benefits of the ShingleMaster program include extended warranty coverage, listing on CertainTeed's "Locate A Contractor" website, marketing assistance, and rewards. Requirements include employing at least one person who is qualified as a Shingle Quality Specialist and a Master Shingle Applicator-qualified crew, or completing a ShingleMaster Credential Course and employing at least one person who is qualified as a Master Shingle Applicator.

Benefits of the SELECT ShingleMaster program are similar to those of the ShingleMaster program. Requirements include being in business for 5 years or being a ShingleMaster for 1 year, having 50% of the crew MSA-certified, employ a Shingle Quality Specialist, passing the Business Fiscal Responsibility exam, and being properly insured.

Environmental Impact

Certainteed claims to recycle the bulk of their internal waste from manufacturing. The company also began the Roofing Responsibly™ program, which is designed to promote homeowners and contractors to recycle old shingles. Certainteed also offers solar shingles, which reduces energy use and CO2 emissions.

Warranty

 

Landmark shingles are covered by a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturer’s defects. They are also covered by a 15-year StreakFighter algae resistance warranty and a 15-year 110 mph wind resistance warranty.
