IKO is a family-owned, privately held manufacturer of residential and commercial roofing, insulation, and waterproofing products. The company began in Calgary, Alberta, and now operates in markets across North America and several other regions.

Corporate History

According to IKO’s current company history, Isidore Koschitzky founded the business in Calgary in 1951 to produce building paper. Shingle production began in 1954. IKO expanded to Europe with a shingle plant in Ham, Belgium, in 1972.

IKO dates its U.S. expansion to 1980, when it purchased a factory in Wilmington, Delaware—not 1979, as older profiles sometimes report. The company later added plants and businesses in North America, Europe, and other regions. Because its footprint continues to change, use IKO’s current locations directory rather than an old employee, country, or plant count.

IKO ROOFPRO Contractor Program

IKO’s current contractor program is ROOFPRO, not the former ShieldPRO Plus program. Select and Craftsman Premier contractors can offer qualifying extended limited warranties, subject to current program, product, registration, and installation requirements.

Program status does not replace a homeowner’s normal checks. Verify licensing, insurance, references, the written scope, and the contractor’s workmanship warranty. IKO’s warranty center explains current ROOFPRO benefits and provides regional warranty contacts.

Residential Shingle Lines

IKO groups residential asphalt shingles into designer, performance, architectural, and traditional categories. Its current comparison tool lists named products and their available colors, impact ratings, ArmourZone reinforcement, algae resistance, wind terms, cool colors, and other specifications.

Designer: profiles intended to resemble natural slate or wood shake.
Performance: products such as Dynasty and Nordic, with product-specific reinforced nailing zones and impact ratings.
Architectural: laminated shingles such as Cambridge, with regional variants and colors.
Traditional: three-tab products such as Marathon Plus AR, where available.

Features are not universal across a category. Confirm the data sheet, installation instructions, regional availability, and warranty for the exact product in a contractor’s quote.

Warranty

IKO warranty terms depend on the shingle, country, owner type, installation date, companion products, and installation. The current U.S. limited-warranty table lists limited lifetime terms for qualifying Armourshake, Crowne Slate, Royal Estate, Nordic, Dynasty, Cambridge Cool Colors, and Cambridge shingles, and a 300-month term for Marathon Plus AR.

“Limited lifetime” is a defined ownership-based term, not a guarantee of useful roof life. Coverage may be prorated and contains product-specific Iron Clad protection periods, wind-speed and duration limits, algae terms, transfer rules, exclusions, and installation requirements. Use IKO’s warranty center to obtain the document that applies to the roof’s product, location, and installation date.

Bad shingles, worse customer service

Run far away. A light breeze is blowing ours off and after a very
lengthy warranty review by Iko they denied the claim based on an excuse
that makes zero sense and we’ve had two uninvolved roofers tell us was
not the cause of failure. It was 100% the shingle failing and Iko won’t
back their product.

Extremely Poor Customer Service from Iko

Iko is by far the worst roofing company when comes customer service. We
live in a condo building built in 2014 and shingle problems started day
one. We were never able to get replacement or corrective measures from
them. The problem is always others from Iko. Extremely poor service,
Extremely poor products == don’t do business with them. There are other
serious and professional companies out there that will serve you much
better than Iko.

Awe Struck By IKO Dynasty

I was skeptical about selling Iko with the bad reviews that I have seen.
But, what I learned from much investigating (some of which my customers
shared with me) is that there was a problem at a few factories but all
issues got resolved. After months of research, one of my customers who
is an Army Corp engineer determined Iko was the best roof to put on his
house. It is noteworthy that since Iko had the manufacturing issues
they no longer outsource their materials as many of other shingle
manufactures do. All the materials are now made in-house so that the
product is consistent. Which has made them the only shingle manufacturer
that can still produce a lot of material during the 2020 Shingle
shortage. I also know from watching some of my competitors install roofs
that some are cutting corners and not installing every product required
by the manufacture for the warranty. Then if a problem arises they blame
the manufacture for lack of warranty coverage. I personally love Iko! It
is one of the heaviest, sturdiest architectural shingle on the market.
Iko has the longest basic bumper to bumper warranty without having to
buy a useless extended warranty. I fell in love with the Dynasty line.
The color Glacier is a brilliant blend of colors and gives your roof a
slate look for less money. I recently installed it on a million dollar
home. The entire Dynasty line is just stunning. Every time I install a
color I haven't seen on a home yet I am in awe! I will install Dynasty
on every home I will ever own! As I Project Manager, I can't beat the
personal attention I get from my local rep. If I get hit with an odd
ball question I can't answer, I can call her while with my homeowner and
get the answer. She even came out to some of my builds to ensure my
customers were doing well and answered some of my future customers
questions about the shingles. Great customer service!

Poor Quality Shingles not Backed by Warranty

Shingles installed back in 2009 did not last and 25-30 year warranty not
honored after providing ample documents, pics, and sample shingles as
per warranty policy. To make matters worse, in order to get your claim
looked at, you must install new Iko shingles.

Needless to say, the claim was declined based on improper installation of shingles (high nailing) which was done by a certified and reputable company in business for 25 years plus. All roofing company I explain my story all say to stay away from IKO.

Failed Shingles Worthless Warranty

First, I will start with the fact that I am a Material Specifier, Space
Planner and a General Contractor & have been in the construction
business for 4 decades. I installed IKO's "Crown Slate" color: "Regal
Stone," on a condo I own in a shore town in NJ. Crown Slate is a Class
IV shingle -- meaning that it has been tested for both Hail resistance (by
steel balls being shot and hitting the shingles) and Wind Resistance.
For wind, the shingles are warranted to stay on up to 110mph, with an
additional limited warranty of up to 130 mph. That is why I spec'd this
shingle for my condo. The barrier islands of NJ tend to get hit a few
times per year with hurricanes and other wind events. Since Superstorm
Sandy, the insurance industry (in this region) has tacked on an
additional 2% Wind Deductible. While most insurance companies offer a
discount for a Class IV shingles, they don't for the barrier islands.
Hence the 2nd reason for spec'ing a Class IV because I wanted to be protected
(lost the majority of my roof shingles during Sandy). IKOs "Crown Slate"
was installed in May 2013. In April 2020, this barrier island had Wind
Gusts documented to 64mph (see pic). Some of my Crown Slate disappeared
to God knows where, while others flipped over and some remained on the
roof. The shingles that flipped over, my roofing sub used to repair some
of the areas. The lost shingles were repaired with whatever stock my
roofer had available. I filed a claim with Iko immediately. After
speaking with their local territory manager (whom I knew from the
original spec). I gave them the timeline, a posted Wind mph pic, several
pics of the damaged roof, the roof repair and completed their claim
form. They didn't respond. So I called them after a few weeks, spoke
with a rep (I won't name), asked why they had not replied to my claim
package and they told me it was because I didn't send any of the roof
samples. No one else in the Roofing Shingle industry requires this. How
are you supposed to send roofing samples, if they blew away? What are
you supposed to do in the meantime? I made several more calls to the
Warranty Manager, as well as emails--each time following up my
conversations with the reps to him and nothing. During those calls, I
asked if Iko would send me a bundle or two of the same Crown Slate
shingles, so I could repair the roof, then I would gladly send them the
damaged shingles. They said, "No, they couldn't do that!" Well, of
course they can and should do that. That is what CertainTeed does, if
they have a failed roof. I wish I could post this story on IKO's website
but they don't have any place to do so. I'm guessing it's b/c they'd
have countless stories like mine (& I'm not just a regular homeowner). I
guess I will have the roof completely redone (with CertainTeed), then
sue Iko for all the Labor & Material, when this could've been settled by
them honoring their Warranty and sending me the few requested bundles.
Maybe all of the dissatisfied shingle owners should get together and
file a Class Action Suit?

Poor quality products/ tiles failed/ company refuses to stand behind its products despite class action suits

30 year shingles disintegrated. Iko ignored class action suit to replace
faulty products. Roofers say it is universally known as a low quality
product and company refuses to stand by its products and obligations.
Stay away at all costs.

Inferior Product

We had our roof replaced back in 2009. In 2014 noticed that shingles
installed (Iko) were lifting and folding over in moderate winds. Unable
to get installing contractor to respond. (Loucks' Brothers, in Altamont, NY). Had continuous problems with shingles lifting. We are now in the
process of getting our 10 year old roof replaced. Insurance adjuster came
by to inspect roof and came to the conclusion that shingles were of very
bad quality, not sealing properly and that contractor poorly installed.

Worst shingle ever used I put shingles on for 42 yrs

Warranty was no good they would not do anything about it. They wouldn’t even send a sales rep out. The shingles would blow off in 20 mph wind. Shingles were not manufactured right not enough glue to hold shingles
down. I would never use Iko again.

JUNK SHINGLES AND CUSTOMER SERVICE

We built a new home in 2005, the builder put on Iko Cambridge 30 year
shingles. Less than 15 years later they are junk and falling off. Filed
a claim and found out that the only thing worse than Iko shingles is
their customer service. File all sorts of info, pictures, receipts and
samples and ask a question and they never respond.

IKO if you cannot provide respectable customer service and stand by you product then close your doors. Your products is trash.

Total Garbage, Terrible Customer Service

Iko shingles were installed on a new home and within one year of
ownership, the tabs on the 3 tab shingles lifted because they no longer
adhered to each other and the tabs would flap and eventually tear off
due to any wind. I've had shingles replaced and reattached 8 times over
the 2 1/2 years of owning my new home. I've jumped through hoops sending
photos and documentation to Iko and they refuse to honor any part of
their 8 page warranty which pretty much covers them, not the consumer.
Don't know which is worse, their shingles or customer service. I've had
5 different professional roofers confirm that this is definitely a shingle
defect, not an install issue. All 5 roofers also state they would never
use Iko shingles because they've either experienced problems, or have
knowledge of their inferior shingles and warranty backing. I now need to
have a new roof installed after only owning my new home for 2 1/2 years.
Worst product and customer service I've ever experienced.

Read the reviews and believe the bad ones

Please believe the reviews on this site, the bad ones, are true .
I've had my shingles on for a year only. Leak caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to my home. Iko just sent me a letter the other day saying that they'll give me $500 to have somebody reseal the shingles. Even their own
rep said there's no tar on these shingles. Bad shingles. I'll be talking to my lawyer today and I'll let you know what happened.

Defective inferior shingle

Defective Shingles and Terrible customer service. I paid for a new roof to be installed January of 2016. My Roofer recommend Iko Shingles. The roofer, who has been fantastic, installed the Iko Cambridge Shingles and the roofer/installer for the last three years has come out to do repair
after repair after repair. The darn things are just not sticking!!!!
Even my two neighbors across the street mentioned that shortly after the install they started blowing off the roof. Roofer came back out and put them all back on. Nothing but headache after headache. Finally my roofer said these shingles are defective. I have been trying to work with Iko
Warranty for the last 6 months and have been met with nothing but resistance. I send in what's requested and they ask for more information. Be sure to have your tracking number or how convenient they can't seem to locate the package of shingles and pics. I or my roofer provide that
information and again, met with resistance. Iko customer service is terrible. Jump through all the hoops and provide all the information and still get the run-around. I will be filing a complaint with my state attorney generals office. And I'll be sure to tell anyone (and leave reviews ) who will listen about the defective quality of Iko shingles and the nonexistent customer service. Refused to send a rep out to examine the roof. Screams volumes about the quality of IKO's products.

Collect receipts, pictures and a ton of pictures, exterior front, back, side top bottom, inside the attic and something with your address on the pic. send that in and they will want close ups, climb up on the roof and get CLOSEUP photos

Roll roofing is almost worthless. Garbage.

Iko rolled roofing is a product you should avoid. It is flimsy and weak
and has the bare minimum of granular coating. It tears like tissue paper
and if you leave the slightest bump or nail head under it the material
will puncture and leak almost under it's own weight. I so regret using
it. There are much better products out there for a similar price.

35 year Chateau Shingles

House was built in Oct of 2004 with 35-year Chateau Shingles,. Shingles only
really lasted like 8 years. Yes, we should have done the warranty back
in 2012, but we didn't. So this year we did and sent in shingles and
all kinds of pics more than what they wanted. So deal is $239 back
or 13 bundles of same shingles, Really there is 16 years left on the
35-year shingles and I definitely do not want 13 bundles of junk. Never buy
these shingles.

SHINGLES DEFECTIVE

Had my whole roof done in 2010 -last year in may 2019 we had a wind
storm few shingles went flying off my roof-called our roofers with a contract that says 30 yrs warranty materials and 10 yrs warranty labor. The company was closed. Got in touch with IKO in Brampton Ontario-
they asked me for a piece of the shingles-copy of roof receipt and
pictures of roof proving the shingles were blown off. After many months
and emails they wrote to say the Limited Wind Restistance warranty had expired. WTF. Had to call a roofer and buy shingles and pay up. Just when I thought it was over, this year Feb 24th 2019-rain storm. Another few
shingles blown off a different section of the roof. Now what?
so upset and disappointed. Who is going to help us?? Please reply need urgent help.

Roofing Shingles

We have owned the shingle for 5 years, very durable. I do not feel that I dislike anything about it. No replacement or repairs so far. Yes, I would recommend this to a friend or buy it again. I feel that the shingles have lasted for multiple years without us having to worry. We do take care of them better than most though, keeping sticks and debris off the roof. If I were to buy these again though, I would probably choose a different color, as I do not like the darker color on our house. I also did not research too much when purchasing because these were the recommended shingles to me by a friend. However, now that I have owned them and seen how durable and long-lasting they are, I do not feel any further research would be needed. If you are looking for shingles for your house today, I can guarantee you will not be dissatisfied with your purchase of these shingles.

Won’t seal

Entire roof has not sealed from 5 years ago. North Carolina weather gets into the high 90s. 80 mile per hour winds tore the roof apart. I would never recommend this shingle brand.

Warranty not good

Installed in 2004 and in 2018 we have to replace due to loss of granules
and curling. So we contacted the roofing company and they say there’s no
more warranty on them. Really?! 14 years is not 25 years! And now we are
looking at shelling out another astronomical amount. Shame on the
industry for being so misleading.

Perfect for all environments with a special cover and exact symmetry in any color

I have owned my tile for about 7 years. I remember when I bought them, I installed in 2011. I liked very much the type of tile that I bought because it was very good and energetic and I did not get to feel much heat. If I had to say something that I did not like about my tile, I would say nothing because to date, it has not brought me any inconvenience. I would buy the same type of tile because I like them, and as I said earlier, It has not brought me any problem. And I will not mention that the red color with the walls of my house stands out a lot and besides that, my son loves them and I told them again that I had planned to change them and they refused to agree with me.

Great shingles for Tornado Alley

Living in the Midwest comes with hot summers, cold winters, and storm ridden springs. My family and I have lived in our house for 9 years and had IKO Asphalt Roofing Shingles put on since they can handle cold weather and have good weight. As I mentioned, we get plenty of cold temps and snow which can be awful and cause shingles to become brittle. We also have plenty of storms and tornadoes in spring. I can't really think about any negatives comments about the brand considering the price is fair in my opinion. It has only been 9 years but with all the inclement weather we have had we have not had to replace any shingles, which is great. My elderly neighbor couple had their roof re-shingled a few years back after a particularly Spring and I recommend the shingles my family and I use. So, I'd recommend checking this brand out if you are replacing old shingles.

Roofing Shingles are in Great Shape!

I have had these shingles on my house for 10 years now and they are still in fantastic shape. They were installed by McVay Brothers Roofing. They hold up to rain and snow very well, which is a necessity for me as I live in Spokane, WA where the winters can get very snowy. They are great because I have never experienced a leak through them or seen them break and come apart. If I had to say one thing bad about them it would probably be the fact that visually they look a slight bit weathered compared to when they were brand new, but this is expected and definitely a minor part in deciding what roofing to get as it still looks generally very good. I have never had to replace any part of it, it is holding up very strong. I would most definitely recommend this to a friend as I love mine and have experienced very little trouble maintaining it.

unsatisfied with our roofing

We paid quite a bit for this set of shingles, with a name that implies durability, when we had our roof redone last year. We've had to replace some of them on a number of occasions. The wind just seems to knock them off. We have another brand of shingles on the rest of the roof and they are just fine. They look nice, but here in Kansas, we have many different kinds of weather, and I really don't need the hassle of having to replace these things every couple of months. I think the problem is with the tar, it just doesn't seem to keep them sealed with the other shingles and so they blow off and have to be replaced. Unfortunately, they don't offer a warranty. We're stuck with it for now, at least until I get my job back. I really don't like to think about it that much.

Asphalt Shingles Review

We recently built our house back in February of this year, so it is almost ten months old. After a lot of research, we decided to go with IKO shingles because we had read a lot of good things about them. So far we have had no issues with these shingles. They look very nice on the house and match our brick color. There were many options to choose from. Since they are fairly new we haven't had to replace them, but I don't think that will be necessary for a while. I would buy them again and I would definitely recommend them to a friend. This is a durable and attractive brand with lots of different options. We have had several intense storms lately and the roof still looks perfect. There is no damage done at all. The last house I had had many issues with the roofing and I can tell that these shingles are very high quality in comparison.
